There's a moment that happens at nearly every regional tournament L Valley teams attend. It's usually sometime in the second half, when the opposing squad starts to slow down — legs heavy, touches getting sloppy — and our kids are still pressing hard. Coaches from other programs notice it. Parents in the stands from other towns notice it. And if you ask the right people around here, they'll tell you it's not an accident.
It's the valley.
What's Actually Going On With Our Environment
L Valley sits at an elevation that, while not extreme, is meaningful when it comes to athletic performance. The air is thinner than what you'd find at sea level, which means the body has to work a little harder to deliver oxygen to working muscles during intense activity. Over time — and we're talking weeks and months of regular training in these conditions — young players develop more efficient cardiovascular systems. Their bodies adapt. Their lungs learn to do more with less.
"I didn't think much about it at first," says Coach Marcos Rivera, who has been running youth training sessions in L Valley for going on eleven years. "But I kept hearing from coaches at tournaments that our kids had unusual stamina. Eventually I started asking myself why, and the altitude piece was something that kept coming up."
And it's not just the elevation. L Valley's humidity levels fluctuate more than most players realize, swinging between dry stretches in late summer and damp, heavy air in the spring season. That variability forces players to adjust how they breathe, how they pace themselves, and how hard they push during different stretches of a match.
Wind as a Teacher
Anyone who has played more than a few games on our local fields knows that the wind in this valley has a personality. It comes from the ridgelines in unpredictable gusts, changes direction mid-half, and has a way of turning a perfectly struck ball into an adventure. Most players from outside the area find it disorienting. Our kids? They've been dealing with it since they were seven years old.
"You learn to read the game differently," says U14 midfielder Sofia Castillo, who has been playing in L Valley since she was in second grade. "Like, I always check which way the flags are moving before a match. I adjust my passing angles. Kids I play against at tournaments don't even think about that stuff."
That kind of tactical awareness — the habit of scanning your environment and adapting your decisions accordingly — is something coaches spend years trying to teach. In L Valley, the wind does some of that work for free.
Sports performance consultant Dr. Anita Pham, who has worked with youth athletic programs across the Pacific Northwest and Northern California, says this kind of environmental challenge is genuinely valuable. "When young players train in variable conditions consistently, they develop what we sometimes call situational flexibility," she explains. "They're not just executing set plays — they're reading and reacting. That's a higher-order soccer skill, and it tends to show up big in high-pressure tournament moments."
Seasonal Swings and What They Build
L Valley's soccer calendar runs through some genuinely tough stretches. Early spring practices can mean cold mornings with frost still on the grass. Late summer tournaments bring heat that climbs into the upper 90s. Fall season brings that mix of crisp air and unpredictable afternoon storms.
Rather than viewing those swings as obstacles, more and more coaches here are starting to treat them as part of the curriculum.
"I used to cancel practice when the weather was rough," admits Coach Denise Okafor, who coaches a U12 girls team. "Now I lean into it a little more — obviously within safe limits — because I've seen what it does for mental toughness. When you've practiced in the cold and the wind and the heat, a tournament game under neutral conditions feels almost easy."
That mental toughness component is harder to measure than cardiovascular efficiency, but coaches and parents around the league consistently describe it. L Valley kids, they say, don't rattle easily. They've been dealing with imperfect conditions their whole athletic lives.
The Tournament Advantage Nobody Talks About
When L Valley teams travel to tournaments in flatter, sea-level areas, something interesting tends to happen. The thinner-air training effect means players feel like they have extra gas in the tank. The air feels easier to breathe. The legs feel lighter.
"We went to a tournament down in the Central Valley last spring," says Coach Rivera. "And my kids were flying in that second half. I had to remind myself that they'd been training at elevation all season. For them, playing at lower altitude is almost like a performance boost."
It's a phenomenon that endurance athletes — particularly runners and cyclists — have known about for decades. High-altitude training camps exist specifically to create this effect. L Valley players get it as a natural byproduct of simply showing up to practice.
Making the Most of What We've Got
The coaches who seem to get the most out of this natural advantage are the ones who are intentional about it. Rather than just accepting the environment, they're designing training sessions that amplify what the valley already provides — incorporating more aerobic work to leverage the altitude adaptation, building in tactical drills that account for wind variability, and scheduling some practices during the hottest and coldest parts of the day to build that mental edge.
Dr. Pham's advice for L Valley programs is to document what they're already doing. "You're sitting on something real here," she says. "Coaches should be tracking fitness benchmarks across seasons and comparing tournament performance data. What's happening in this valley is worth understanding more deeply."
For now, though, most of our players don't need a sports scientist to tell them the valley is making them tougher. They feel it every time they step onto a field somewhere else and realize — somewhere around the 60th minute — that they've still got plenty left.
That's the valley effect. And we're just getting started.
